Grab your flying broomstick!
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is expected to open in Orlando by late May. Billed as a “theme park within a theme park” at Universal Studios, the magical microcosm is expected to enchant Muggles (non-magical people) of all ages.
Fans who have fallen in love with the boy wizard through J.K. Rowling’s books and the Warner Bros. films will get to experience, taste and touch much of Harry’s world.
Even Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry on the big screen, says he’s excited.
“I remember I would come out of films when I was younger and absolutely just wish that world could be real and I could be a part of it,” he says. “It’s fantastic that people will actually get to realize everything they’ve seen on screen.”
While Universal is being cryptic about an opening date and the site is still under construction, some riveting details have been revealed.
The venue will pack 20 acres of attractions, shops and eateries within Universal’s Islands of Adventure park.
Wizarding World’s creators worked closely with Rowling and film artists to keep the venue true to the story.
Towering over everything else, Hogwarts castle can already be seen beyond Universal’s gates. Fans know it as the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where Harry and his friends learn to perfect their magic.
The castle will host an attraction called Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey, which creators promise “will use brand-new technology to bring the magic stories and characters of the film to life in ways you’ve never experienced before.”
Thrill-seekers will head straight for the Dragon Challenge, inspired by the Triwizard Tournament (featured in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”). An existing two-track high-speed roller coaster — once called Dueling Dragons — is being made over. Those brave enough to board this Dragon Challenge will get to choose between Hungarian Horntail and Chinese Fireball tracks.
A family-friendly roller coaster, Flight of the Hippogriff, is a re-theming of the park’s Flying Unicorn ride.
Hagrid, the half-giant character who teaches the Care of Magical Creatures class at Hogwarts, will give a lesson in how to ride a hippogriff — a mythical creature that’s a cross between a lion, an eagle and a horse. Then he’ll send you on a flight over the castle grounds.
Guests will enter the park into Hogsmeade Village — familiar to fans as the only settlement in Great Britain inhabited solely by magical beings.
